About Elizabeth House
Elizabeth House is a faith-based nonprofit in Pasadena, CA, serving pregnant women and their children experiencing homelessness. We are committed to ending the cycle of homelessness and abuse through comprehensive case management, counseling, educational classes, pre and postnatal care, and resources throughout pregnancy and beyond. We serve an average of 15-20 families per year in our Residential Program, 120 families through Alumni Services and offer expanded services to families in the community through our Center for Mother and Child Wellbeing.

Job Description Summary
Elizabeth House seeks a compassionate and dependable Resident Assistant (RA) to help create a safe, structured, and nurturing home environment for pregnant women and their children. This role combines direct resident support, household operations, and community-building through a trauma-informed care approach. This is a highly hands-on role that requires both relational engagement and consistent completion of daily household responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities
Resident Support
Build trust and rapport with residents and children using a trauma-informed care approach
Support residents with daily routines, parenting responsibilities, and independent living skills
Welcome and orient new residents, including room preparation and program expectations
Maintain professional boundaries while offering warmth and support
Respond to resident conflicts, emotional distress, or crises using de-escalation techniques
Household Operations
Plan, prepare, and facilitate family-style dinners (Monday–Thursday), fostering a sense of community
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization through consistent, hands-on completion of daily household tasks of both indoor and outdoor areas
Assist with the distribution of household supplies and donations
Documentation & Communication
Maintain accurate and timely logs of household activities and resident updates
Report incidents, concerns, or safety issues in accordance with agency protocols
Communicate effectively with team members to ensure continuity of care
Safety & Environment
Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for residents, staff, and visitors
Follow all safety procedures, including emergency response protocols
Participate in drills, trainings, and team meetings
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma
Experience working with vulnerable populations
Ability to engage residents and their children, from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, via a trauma-informed lens.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Valid California driver’s license with:
Clean driving record
Proof of personal auto insurance
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Experience in residential, transitional housing, or maternal/child programs a plus
Training in trauma-informed care, domestic violence awareness, or mental health first aid
Essential Duties:
Ability to lift and carry up to 25-40 pounds
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time
Ability to respond to emergencies – day or night – depending on scheduled shift
Work Environment:
This role operates within a residential setting serving pregnant women and young children. The environment may include:
Exposure to emotionally sensitive situations
Occasional high-stress or crisis scenarios
Shared communal living spaces
Provide support to residents during late pregnancy and postpartum recovery, including responding to urgent needs, supporting newborn care routines, and following established protocols for escalation when medical concerns arise.
This role includes supporting residents through emotionally significant moments, including late pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Staff must be able to stay calm and responsive.
Resident Assistants are often the only staff member on-site during their shift and are responsible for overseeing the home and responding to resident needs independently.
This role includes evening shifts (4:00 pm – 11:00 pm), weekend day shifts (9:00 am to 4:00 pm), and overnight shifts (11:00 pm – 9:00 am).
Overnight shifts include designated sleep time in a private room; however, staff must remain on-site and available to respond to resident needs or emergencies.
Schedules are created monthly, taking staff availability into consideration while prioritizing program needs.
Employment is contingent upon:
Successful background check, including Live Scan fingerprinting
Clearance through child abuse registry
TB test clearance
Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record, and proof of personal auto insurance
Mandated Reporter Requirement
This position is a Mandated Reporter. The employee is required to comply with all applicable reporting laws and complete mandated reporter training upon hire.
